Best Melbourne Life Hacks
I figured there are a lot of extra little bits of advice that it would be handy to know, so consider this a little helpful list until I turn it into a better, more useful post.
- MYKI public transport tickets have a daily maximum fare. This means that if you ride once, it will cost you $4.40. If you ride a second time, it will cost you $8.80, but that will be the cap for the day. What this means is that if you get 200 different trams, trains or buses, this will be the maximum amount you will pay for the day.
- Currency transfers can be expensive. If you are planning on being here for a few months even, there's a better way of doing things than to keep using your own cards/accounts from your home country. Open up an account with 'TRANSFERWISE', and you can use this as a local bank account and get your own card, or you can use it to send money to a local bank account which can be opened up. You will save massively on conversion fees as well as ATM/cash machine fees whilst you're here. You can create an account on Transferwise by clicking here.
- Eating and drinking can be expensive in Melbourne, but it is also one of the best reasons to come to the city. My personal favourite thing in the world is an app called EATCLUB. When restaurants are quiet, they will advertise anywhere from 10% to 50% off their entire bill, and there's some fantastic restaurants on there.
- When buying a MYKI card, if you are only going to be using it once or twice pay using cash. At the ticket machines where you can buy them, if you are purchasing the card itself ($6), you are then required to add credit onto it. If paying buy card, you need to put at least $10 on, meaning your minimum costs are $16 non-refundable. If paying with cash, you are only required to put the minimum of $1 onto the card, meaning that your costs are as low as $7. If you are only using the card once, this will mean that your balance will go to minus $3 (-$3), and still be valid.
..... to be continued.
